Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of individuals in a range of community settings and peoples’ homes, who provide support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing. Workers promote a person-centered approach, work according to and may contribute to an individualised plan, and work without direct supervision.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in organisations such as organisation that provide support and care for people with disabilities at residential and healthcare facilities. 

The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

 

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

Entry Requirements

Students entering CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support must meet the following academic and English entry requirements:

 

Academic

  • A candidate must be a minimum age of 18 year & above AND
  • Completed the equivalent of Australian Year 11/12 or Certificate III or higher

English requirements

International students applying either off-shore or on-shore will require:

IELTS:

A minimum IELTS (General/Academic) test score of 6.0 or equivalent & up to 10 weeks of ELICOS course to be undertaken for every 0.5 level of IELTS requirement, before the commencement of the main VET course

Results older than two (2) years are not acceptable   OR

PTE:

A minimum PTE (Academic) test score of 52 or equivalent & up to 10 weeks of ELICOS course to be undertaken, before the commencement of the main VET course

Results older than two (2) years are not acceptable.

Course Structure

Students will need to complete the following 10 units of competency to attain the qualification.

The course requires learners to integrate technical skills and provide community service to customers for a minimum of 120 hours in duration.

  • CHCCCS044 Follow established person-centred behaviour supports
  • CHCDIS017 Facilitate community participation and social inclusion
  • CHCDIS018 Facilitate ongoing skills development using a person-centred approach
  • CHCDIS019 Provide person-centred services to people with disability with complex needs
  • CHCLEG003 Manage legal and ethical compliance
  • CHCMHS001 Work with people with mental health issues
  • HLTWHS003 Maintain work health and safety
Elective Units:
  • CHCDIS014 Develop and use strategies for communication with augmentative and alternative communication systems
  • CHCDIS015 Develop and provide person-centred service responses
  • CHCDIS016 Develop and promote positive person-centred behaviour supports
